Since 2002, the trading hall of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, a classicist building ensemble, has been closed for floor trading. For the thus vacated hall, our design proposes an intriguing dialogue between the existing building and new planning with a play of transparency and lightness. A newly installed four-level structure in the hall offers space for a business incubator, a restaurant as well as exhibition and event areas - a prestigious meeting place for Hamburg's business community. The new structure is surrounded by a „curtain“ of fine, braided stainless steel ropes that separates old and new like a waterfall flowing from the ceiling. The recesses of the semi-open levels allow an upward view. They are partly surrounded by tinted and clear glass panels, offering a variety of insights and outlooks. The strong identity of the historical hall is not only preserved but emphasised and reinterpreted through new perspectives and contrasts.
