The new building ‘Alter Steinweg 1-3’ is centrally located in the Hamburg-Neustadt district and in direct vicinity to the Fleetinsel and Großneumarkt. It combines the office building “Fleetinselkontor” and the residential building “City Living” providing 49 exclusive apartments with floor areas ranging from 40 to 150 square metres. The six-storey office building completes the perimeter development. Small retail units are positioned on the ground floor. The corner section is raised by one level and forms an independent counterpart against the building occupied by the Ministry of Economics. The residential building is oriented towards a greened courtyard. The façade facing the street makes reference to the characteristic materials of the immediate surroundings, uses traditional brick motifs and transfers them to a modern design vocabulary. The “shed” bay windows with a triangular, asymmetric base area loosen up the otherwise rectangular façade geometry and generate a vivid play of light and shadow.
